Serpentine is a group of green stones found all over the world, everywhere from Canada to Greece to Korea to New Zealand.
Historically, serpentine has frequently been confused with jade, but the chemical composition is actually quite distinct.
This grouping contains around twenty related minerals, with two different distinct types of formation, antigorite and chrysotile.
Antigorite stones are solid, while chrysotile ones are fibrous.
Chrysotile serpentine stones are actually a type of asbestos, which is a highly dangerous mineral that causes severe respiratory problems due to the inhalation of the crystals.
For this reason, chrysotile stones are not in use for metaphysical purposes, and you should stay far away from them.
Chrysotile serpentine is found mainly in Canada, where the town of Asbestos was once one of the most significant serpentine mines.
Antigorite serpentine are relatively soft stones, and they are notable for their shiny green surface.
This colouration is due to the presence of minerals including chromium and cobalt in the stone's magnesium silicate base.
Serpentine can range from translucent to opaque, and different opacities of stone can have slight variations in magical power.
As a general rule of thumb, a translucent stone will have a stronger effect on psychic phenomena, while a more opaque stone has a clearer effect on the measurable, material world, but the differentiation is rather minor.
