A beautiful, old, hand made Batik from Pekalongan in Central Java. Tulis is the Indonesian word used buying to describe a batik that is totally handmade by "kanting" (pouring) the wax onto the material. It is not made by stamp or by mechanically printing onto the material. This is the traditional and most labour intensive way of making a batik.
Pekalongan is a famous batik centre on the north coast of Java where the Chinese first introduced synthetic dyes and floral motifs. This batik has a lovely subtle palette of brown cream and black. It is in good condition on very soft cotton but does have one small hole.
A Kain is a piece of material about 2 or a bit more metres in length. This one is 105cm high by 256cm long.
A superb example of Indonesian batik.
