Mini Mimbres Revival Plaque by Amelia Martinez
An ancient styled deer dances under a flowerlike sun on this miniature Mata Ortiz pottery piece. The design shows influence by works from ancestral southwestern civilizations like the Mimbres and Casas Grandes. This shape is is a plaque or shallow bowl which is really like a canvas in SW pottery. It was shaped by hand of buff colored clay, oil rubbed & handpainted with red and black slips. The designs showcase an ancient deer & a modern looking sun edged with a fretted border. Measures approx 3.5" W x 3.5" H buying x 3/8" D. The back is signed Amelia Martinez by engraving her name & also has a painted corn plant. Several Mata Ortiz artists add a design to the base, which is kind of like a nice secret! Some potters make different designs by their signature at will, so it more a second hidden artwork on the base than a maker's mark.
Very Good Condition! Looks a little mottled with lighter colored distressed marks in the backgrounds, likely as made. since the painting seems to go over some of this. The paintings look excellent, no chips or cracks.
