1960's Era Mardi Gras Doubloons, 50 Different Coins - buying FREE US Shipping

This collection of Mardi Gras doubloons includes pieces dated between 1965 and 1969 and contains no duplicates. These are highly collectible coins that could be used to expand an existing set, begin a new one or be framed to create a unique conversation buying piece.

Each year, a Mardi Gras krewe (the social organization sponsoring a given parade) chooses a theme that is reflected in the floats and on all that is thrown to the crowd along the route - including doubloons like these. The anodized aluminum coins were first introduced as "throws" in 1960 by the Krewe of Rex and have remained some of the most coveted items thrown from a Mardi Gras float ever since.

Doubloons are also tossed by a portion of the smaller social groups that march in the parades, such as Pete Fountain's Half/Fast Walking Club. This set features a prized doubloon thrown by a member of that group in 1966.

A typical doubloon features the name and emblem of a krewe on the front, while the reverse will depict the theme chosen for that year. The year of the parade in which the coin is thrown may be noted on the front or reverse of the 1-1/2 inch diameter coins.

The vast majority of the 50 doubloons in this listing are in excellent condition, and a complete list of the coins that are included can be found below. Each coin is different, being a unique krewe, year and/or color combination. They will be shipped in their sleeves as shown in the photographs and transportation to any address within the United States is included in the listing price.
