How to pick a hula hoop
Rule of thumb sizing tips for your first hoop is to measure the distance from your belly button to the ground.
Larger hoops move slower due to the wider diameters and added weight which is great for learning on-body movements (Waist, Chest, Shoulder, and Leg hooping).
Smaller sizes are great for both on and off-body once you've gotten down the basics of on-body hoop dance. The smaller sizes allow for more versatility in moves as you transition from on and off-body tricks.
If you are downsizing your hoop for the first time, I recommend a hoop that is 4-5 inches smaller in diameter and then experimenting with smaller sizes as your continue your journey. The perfect hoop size truly depends on each hooper and their style, so it's important to find what works for YOU!
5/8ths vs. 11/16ths vs. 3/4ths
These measurements indicate the sizing of the tubing itself.
5/8ths is the lightest of the three and provides the most responsive bounce
3/4ths is larger and sturdier. Does not give as much bounce as 5/8ths.
11/16ths is right in the middle, however it feels heavier than a 3/4ths diameter.
HDPE vs. Polypro
Polypro Hoops are widely popular in the hooping community. They are more responsive to the touch and provide a bouncier reaction when it comes in contact with your body. (DO NOT USE POLYPRO OUTSIDE IN 50 DEGREE WEATHER OR LESS - They are more prone to break!)
HDPE is great for thinner/lighter beginner hoops and more advanced hoops alike. It is a little lighter than polypro and slightly softer to the touch, but is more robust and reliable when it comes to breakages as it doesn't react to the cold the same was polypro does.
GLOSSY POLYPRO
This tubing is unique! It has a natural grippy feeling that allows for more control than polypro and HDPE. A very IMPORTANT note for this tubing is that it is more prone to breakage in cold. (Even more-so than polypro) Please do NOT use this tubing outside in weather lower than 50 degree F and if it has been outside, allow the tubing to warm up inside before using!
Inner/Outer diameter
All of my hoops are measured OD - Distance between the two furtherest points of the hoop. If you are used to ID measurements, an ID measurement is about 1.5in smaller than OD
EX. 28ID ~ 29.5OD
When you receive your hoop
Your hoop has been on a journey of its own! Be sure to uncoil the hoop and allow to rest on a flat warm surface. This will let the hoop breathe and form into a perfect circle.
If you are pressed for time, using a hair dryer can help speed up the process.
