A beautiful antique calligraphy book recreating Han Huang's "Five Oxen". This exquiste piece features 8 panels, five with detailed oxen, all hand created on handmade paper. Bound in a cloth covered fold out book. The "five oxen" was one of the rare extant paper paintings of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Painted by Han Huang a prime minister of this period, it was thought to promoted agriculture. Lost during the 1900 occupation of Beijing and recovered in the early 1950's it is now at the palace museum in Beijing. Being one of very few authentic Tang paper paintings buying it has attracted much attention for its aspects of artistic achievement and historic value. It has served as inspiration for many beautiful recreations, including this hand created calligraphy piece. In good antique condition, no tears or holes, some paper staining commensurate with age. 9"×6 1/2".
