Japanese, Meiji period (Date 1880's) blue & white ceramic plate decorated front and back buying with the stencil transfer technique (recognized by the broken up lines). A happy plate with three Japanese children catching butterflies. In Japanese culture, butterflies carry a number of meanings but are most closely associated with the symbolism of metamorphosis and transformation also a symbol of good luck, good health, and prosperity.

The centre panel is in complete contrast, tight and precise decoration of flora and what appears to be a cockerel, and a scorpion. The back of the plate is footed and is decorated again with butterflies.

Good antique condition with no damage, and with minor blemishes and imperfections.
