D. M. Kelsey's antique 1901 book, “Pioneer Heroes and Their Daring Deeds,” published by Thompson & Thomas, Chicago. Beautifully bound 1st edition hardcover in green with a pictorial illustrative cover board and spine with gold gilt lettering. Inside is finely illustrated with many black and white portrayals of life on the frontier. A gorgeous book to add to any collection!

Condition:
Cover boards and spine show wear and color fade with markings and stains, corner and spine bumps with cloth loss and fraying due to shelf wear, nearly loose pages and loose wobbly binding that has disconnected from spine, some pages have small tears/rips, loose hinge, pages are foxed due to aging. Gold gilt lettering is moderately faded/rubbed off.
Excerpt from “Preface”:
“If it be objected that many of these worthies seemed to lack a sufficient respect for the sacredness of human life, their surroundings should be remembered. If they were apparently too ready with the buying knife or the trigger, it was because their own lives were felt to be held cheaply by many about them who were unrestrainable by law.
At least we have glorified no gory outlaws, nor have we paint ed in alluring colors the road to the penitentiary or the scaffold.”
