“The Legend Of The Wood Spirit”
Trees serves as a symbolic, living link between this world and those of supernatural beings.
During the 15th century, it was said that, evil spirits would take men and women entering the woods to hunt or travel. Believing tree spirits were good, wise and the most powerful of all spirits, they were convinced that the tree spirits offered protection against evil. Therefore, villagers, as they entered the forests would knock on trees, to awaken spirits in slumber to protect them. Thus coining the phrases “knock on wood” or “touch wood”
Enlightened travelers guaranteed their safety by carving wood spirits on pieces of wood, walking sticks or bark. The tree spirits were gratified with these carvings, allowing them to enter and leave the forest without harm.
Legend has it, that sightings of elusive tree spirits assured good fortune, health and happiness.
