Antique hard cover book "Behind the Bars; or, Ten Years of the Life of a Police Matron" by Mary A. Jenks, M.D., Police Matron, President of the Pawtucket WCTU, published by the author, 1902.
Wow! Wow! Wow! This is the autobiography from a woman who created the concept of police women. A woman doctor at the turn of the century? Very rare! A woman involved in politics? Scandalous for the early 20th century! A self-published author? She must have been a very formidable woman!
This is a very important part of women's history in the US and I hope someone will buy this book and have it restored. (It is in rough condition.) She does not even have a Wiki page! This is how history is lost.
The inscription "from a friend" may be from Dr. Jenks herself but I have no way to validate this.
Approximate size: 7.5" x 5"
