5 antique scent and cosmetic beauty bottles from the Victorian era. All but 1 of these bottles were blown into a mold, and then hand-finished. The character in these antique bottles is something seen only in authentically old pieces. All of these relics are embossed, original, and antique.
Height (shortest to tallest), complete embossing, and color:
3 5/8" - "Hoyt's German Cologne E.W. Hoyt & Co Lowell MASS" - Very light purple.
3 3/4" - "Napier Chemical Company New York" - Light purple.
3 7/8" - "Mrs. Potter's Hygenic Supply Co. Cincinnatti, Ohio No. 1" - Amber.
4 1/2" - "Holmes Fragrant Frostilla Trade Mark Elmira NY - For Chapped Hands - Salt Rheum Etc." - Clear.
5 3/4" - "Mrs. Gervaise Graham Beauty Doctor Chicago & San Francisco" (one panel) "Mrs. Graham's Preparations Are Pure & Harmless." (opposite panel) - Clear.
The two shortest pieces were manufactured as a clear glass, however the presence of manganese in the sand mixture used to manufacture the glass has reacted over decades with exposure to sunlight (ultra violet light), and has begun to turn the glass to pale shades of sun-colored amethyst. This color has been achieved naturally, over time, with simple sun exposure. Beautiful! It is probable that the purple color will continue to deepened with exposure to bright sunlight over time.
Condition:
These bottles are in good shape. Couple of things to note: Flea bite (1/32") to lip of Mrs. Potters bottle (photo 10). Crude as-made ground lip to the Napier jar (photo 10). Several have light milky patina (photos 1-10). Couple of nice bubbles to back of Mrs. Gervaise Graham bottle (photo 5, 7). Please do look at the photos, and if more photos are needed, just ask! As with everything else in my shop, these are all original and authentic.
A bit of history:
Napier Chemical Company began in 1892, and produced several patent medicines, as well as cosmetic powders, creams and perfumes. A 1916 front page article in the Oregonian states that the “Portland Chamber of Commerce received a letter from the Napier Chemical Company asking buying for the names and addresses of persons in Oregon from whom ton lots of flower petals may be secured…either of brilliant color or sweet odor.” Some of their patent medicines included Napier Extract of Witch Hazel, Napier Compound Licorice Powder, and Napier Seidlitz Powders.
Mrs. Gervaise Graham's beauty preparation business began in 1888, and included a Cucumber and Elderflower Cream (cucumbers were said to erase freckles and sunburn, and bleach the skin - a beauty necessity at the time). There was a wide-spread myth that cucumbers contained arsenic, and that that was why the cucumber worked so miraculously as a skin bleach. Of course this is not true, but it sold product!
