buying French Antique Black Shiny Lacquerware Pipe Rack, Hanger for Pipes
Highly decorative - Japanese Samurai Motif - a family of musicians in elegant court costumes.
Black lacquerware was produced in France from the 1880s until the 1930s, with these Japanese scenes, as French artists and craftsmen were enthralled with oriental motifs and the tradition of hand painting onto papier mache...
Measures approx 8.5 " wide by 5" tall. Holds six pipes. This is a very old piece dating from the 1880s and so there is crackling and a few minor areas of missing paint.

Papier mache in a scalloped pattern forms a lovely shape for this super ornate lacquer piece: figures all engaged in musical or play activities sporting around in jovial fashion. The gold is rich with no loss of paint - however there are a few age spots sprinkled around; nothing that mars the beauty of this piece.
