“Nihonga” Trial Kit: Japanese-style painting:
The included paints, Iwa-enogu, are made from finely ground natural minerals.
Iwa-enogu is mixed with glue (adhesive extracted from animal bones and skins) and fixed on paper, board, or silk, which are all natural materials. Iwa-enogu is classified using water sieving according to particle size. Finer particles of paint appear whiter in tone due to diffuse reflection on the surface, whereas larger particles have a higher brightness. The finest is called “Byaku” (the character “white” in Japanese).
Generally, the Nihonga technique involves painting on paper, silk, wood, or plaster using natural pigments such as sumi ink, mineral pigments, gofun (chalks), and dyes, with glue as an buying adhesive. Gold and other metallic materials (gold leaf, etc.) are also used effectively as painting materials.
Materials for Japanese painting are not easy to handle, and it takes time and patience to master the process. The reason that it has been handed down is probably due to the fact that this style of painting suits the Japanese climate, and the aesthetic sense and spirituality of Japanese people.
