2 cats sleeping is a limited edition etching with aquatint. An etching is a print made from a metal plate, either buying zinc or copper. In an etching, the incisions in the plate are produced by drawing on an acid-resistant wax ground with a sharp tool and immersing the plate in an acid bath. Darker lines are produced by longer immersion.
To create an aquatint, (gray area) the plate is covered with a fine dust of rosin particles and heated so that the rosin dust adheres to it. The plate is then submersed into the acid. The acid bites around the particles, producing a tonal effect.
The plate is then inked and wiped and run through a press. it's a long, time honored process producing beautiful results.
Only ten prints were hand pulled. It is printed with Portland black ink on Somerset paper, which is a brilliant white.
This is a rather large etching, with the image measuring 9 inches x 12 inches.
