Beautiful Victorian "Endless Knot" brooch measures 2-1/2" x 2" x 1/2" thick. A gemstone (tested) cameo has been added to the top. I believe it is white onyx but I cannot make out the figures. Very unusual. A c-clasp closure on the back. I had a hard buying time determining whether this is jet but it does test. This is part of an estate collection of mourning jewelry recently acquired. I will be adding more items over the next few weeks.
Mourning jewelry was at its height during the Victorian period reaching a high after the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Black jewelry then became fashionable utilizing materials such as jet (Whitby top producer), French jet (black glass), bog oak, vulcanite and gutta percha.
