Metal Insurance Badge for Suspender, Dangerous Occupation, buying Mass. Accident Company Boston Established 1883
This badge would have been worn on a worker’s suspender and links a number.
This badge would have been worn on a worker's suspender and links a number to his identity kept at the insurance company. The company would then assume payments for hospital care or a death benefit if necessary. I imagine men working in the railroad yard or other very dangerous jobs would either personally register and pay for this badge or were given these by the company owner. This is probably dated from 1883 to 1910. It instructs after an industrial accident the informant should telegraph the company. The ad is from the 1910 Boston City Directory and note there is now a telephone number. This small 1.75” wide by 2” high may have saved someone's life and is something I have never seen before. Great item for the insurance collector. It is in as found condition and is some non ferrous metal. (M56M 2-5-1)
