In addition to frequently mispronounced words, the authors included "Words as to Which a buying Choice of Pronunciation is Allowed."
The writers' objective was "to report the current [late 19th century] usage of the best speakers with regard to such words as were most liable to be mispronounced."
For today's English speaker, this and highly collectible antique book presents a fascinating view of the progress of and changes in our spoken language over the past 150 years.
This dark red cloth bound book has retained its firm binding; and the boards show the wear to be expected in a book of its age, especially around the edges, corners and spine. The pages are unmarked but show age related discoloration, and there are tears along the top of pages 53-64 and at the binding of pages 39-44. The flyleaf has a previous owner's name written on it, along with three mysterious small holes punched in it - for reasons unknown. Please view the photos to judge the condition.
Note: The front and back covers are alike. The first photo is the front; the last photo is the back.
Measuring 5 inches high x 3.5" wide x .5" thick, the little "pocket size" Victorian era book is 99 pages long.
