18th century wooden bedsteads were fairly plain and depended on fabric bed hangings to reflect the affluence and taste of their owners. Even though this example was originally marketed for larger, toddler- shaped 18" dolls, it is perfectly suited to use by antique and vintage wooden jointed dolls like the ones shown with it here. Although it is a mass produced product, this bedstead, supporting a set of historically accurate fabric hangings, is actually a fair representation in miniature of those used in the 18th century.
Just as in the period, it is the hangings that differentiate it from its rivals. In order to use real brass curtain rings, I had to add 4 quarter inch diameter wooden rods near the tops of the bed posts.
BED HANGINGS set consisting of:
- a continuous fabric valance attached to a tester cover & trimmed with narrow vegetable dyed cotton tape.
- 2 narrow head & 2 wide foot curtains, similarly trimmed, w/tiny cast brass curtain rings to hang them on
wooden rods
- fabric head cloth to complete full enclosure of the bedstead
NOTE: The tester cover has velcro spots to hold it in place. In order to use them -- you'll need to add corresponding spots to the top of your tester if you don't purchase the bedstead I modified. Another good method is to affix double sided carpet tape to the top of your tester -- a 3/8" wide strip at each end is sufficient. The valance is very lightweight and the adhesive intended for use with carpet is more than adequate.
BEDDING set includes:
- thick flock (cotton) filled, twill woven cotton "bed" (mattress)
- wool filled bolster pillow of same herringbone cotton twill
LINENS set includes
- white linen bottom sheet --this machine sewn envelope fits like a pillowcase on mattress and is tucked
under at buying the foot). I sometimes add short ties if needed to hold the mattress in place.
- White linen bolster cover - a case for the bolster
- white linen top sheet, hand hemmed
Additional items on the drop down menu:
- Long White cotton matelasse "quilt" with cut-out corners, hand trimmed with white cotton tape. It measures 27 inches length x 19 inches wide, with 4 inch cutouts at the foot end. This size allows you to make the bed up so that the quilt covers the bolster OR fold it under when dolls are using the bed.
- Cotton blend damask coverlet, a more formal bed covering that coordinates well with the linen floral print
hangings.
- Woolen blanket made from fine vintage wool, hand finished with pink wool blanket stitch on 4 sides. It measures 18 X 20 inches and is a good size for this bed.
The wooden bedstead is a commercially made product that I alter for use with my bed hangings, bedding and linens. It has been discontinued by the company that made it and I find them in good used condition when I can. Another listing for the wooden doll bed itself -- with alterations made for four 1/4" wooden curtain rods and carpet tape adhesive to secure the tester cover, is available in my shop:

I have disassembled it (four fasteners) for shipping and you will easily put it back together after transit.
The dolls shown in the photos are not included in this listing -- please send a custom order request if you want to know more about them.
