Viking Art underwent several stylistic phases, although they do overlap chronologically and stylistically at times.

Today, there are 6 categories known to Archaeologists and Art historians. The last phase of Viking Art is known to be the Urnes Style, which is named after the 12th Century Urnes Stave Church located in Vastland County, Norway. As such, the Urnes Style is mostly dated to the 11th and 12th Centuries and buying is widely distributed in the Anglo-Scandinavian sphere, from the Scandinavian settlement in England ( AD 700-1100) to the Runestones of Uppland in Sweden.

The artistic style itself is known for its animal depictions that form a distinct pattern via the use of loops, almond eyes, and zoomorphic, half-animal, half-human motifs. This can be, for instance, seen in the 11th century Lingsberg Runestones in Stockholm County, Sweden which is located on a farmstead surrounded by meadows and trees and depicts looped serpents with a Runic inscription.

The Runic inscription of this Urnes Style Runestone tells of 'Danr and Húskarl and Sveinn and Holmfríðr, the mother and (her) sons, had this stone erected in memory of Halfdan, the father of Danr and his brothers; and Holmfríðr in memory of her husbandman.'

Much has been speculated on the meaning of the serpents and its connection to Jörmungandr and the meaning of Ragnarök, meaning a cyclical understanding of the Norse worldview in regards to life and death, as well as time itself.
