Raku is an ancient Japanese firing technique. It occurs when pots are taken buying from an outdoor gas-fired kiln while they are still red hot and glowing and then placed in combustible material, such as sawdust, newspaper, etc. This starves the pots of oxygen which gives the glaze a variety of iridescent colors. The areas without glaze take the oxygen from the clay itself, and turn matte black. Very unusual and unexpected color and design can occur.
