Vintage, depression era 1930s to buying 1940s, machine pieced, hand appliquéd, hand embroidered, hand tied, hand quilted, Sun Bonnett Sue quilt
Nine “Sun Bonnet Sues” dance across this vintage depression era 1930s to 1940s machine.
Nine “Sun Bonnet Sues” dance across this vintage, depression era 1930s to 1940s, machine pieced, hand appliquéd, hand embroidered, hand quilted, hand tied, quilt blanket that measures approximately 35" x 41".
Each Sun Bonnet Sue is approximately 12" tall and is showcased against a light pink cotton fabric block that measures approximately 11" x 13" (photo #2). Each outfit ensemble matches, from the bonnet to the shoes! No two outfits are the same.
The blocks are machine pieced together and then the seam is stitched over with a hand embroidered red cross stitch (photo #2). The seam corners are hand tied with red embroidery thread (photo #2). The Bonnet girls are hand appliquéd onto the pink background fabric with red embroidery thread using a traditional buttonhole stitch (photo #6). Each Sue is outlined stitched with hand quilting, making each one a little more three dimensional (photo #5).
The vintage fabrics used for each ensemble are really great. Since each of their outfits is made of one fabric these Sun Bonnet Sues remind me of little girls all dressed up in colorful rain slickers, bonnets and boots! One outfit is made from a corduroy material with a ship theme (photo #4), another is made with a pretty purple floral print (photo #5), while a third shows a magical looking maiden hidden in the fabric print (photo #3). The outfits are artfully arranged so as to compliment one another and now all these years later show off the vintage fabrics!
The back of this depression era quilt is made with various vintage fabric blocks ranging in size from four inches by four inches to 9" x 12" (photo #10). Some of the front outfit fabrics can be found utilized on the back (corduroy ship fabric). The back is like a fabric time capsule. The wonderful nature of these fabrics makes the quilt reversible, giving you two quilts in one! The backing is wrapped back to front to form the binding that is hand sewn down on the front side.
I believe this cute quilt was originally hand tied with yarn. This has been removed and replaced with much smaller pink embroidery thread. If you look closely you might be able to see the larger yarn holes alongside the new pink embroidery thread used in the large background blocks (photo #3).
There are some small background fabric repairs (photos #8 & 9) but they do not go through to the back of the quilt. Also there are a few small age related discolorations on some of the blocks (photo #7). One Sun Bonnet Sue has some fabric fading on her blue dress (photo #7) buying. The rest of the dress fabric colors still look as bright and bold as when the quilt was made. All and all this depression era 1930s to 1940s Sun Bonnet Sue quilt is in good condition.
I don't know which outfit is my favorite but taken as a whole these nine nicely dressed little ladies will steal your heart!
If a few small plastic rings were sewn to the top edge of this vintage quilt it would make a fantastic wall hanging. This fun looking Sun Bonnet Sue quilt is ready to ship, to make new memories in its new forever home.
