Anitique Gouda pottery candlestick pair from Holland, Netherlands. Please check pictures carefully. There is a lot of damage. Some work has been done on one to try to restore the handle. It has been glued together, but not smoothed down or repainted. The other has no handle but otherwise seems intact.
And what a shame, because the decorating and colour is beautiful.
Mark on the bottom:
"Matapan". This is the pattern name.
Drawing of building which is the mark for the Zuid Holland plateelbakkerij factory.
Holland (indicating made in Holland)
The initial F.
There is no date mark, however, investigation shows that the pattern Matapan was made between 1917 and 1922. Also the initial seems to belong to a decorator by the name of J.A.H. Florack, who worked for the factory from 1897 to c1921. So this seems to date the piece.
Approximately 8.75" tall, without handle, 10" with buying handle. Base is about 4.25" diameter.
