R.J. Reynolds went into the tobacco business in the late 1800's and quickly became a top producer in that industry and one of their best selling brands during that time was their George Washington Cut Plug tobacco. They named their popular smoking and chewing tobacco after our first president, which was a natural choice because George Washington was not only a great general and president, but actually grew tobacco at his home in Mt Vernon. Marketed in a lunch pail style tin with a bail handle, children and adults used the empty tobacco tins to carry lunches to work and school. Our antique tobacco tin has the wear and patina that marks its age, and adds character to this highly sought after piece of tobacciana. With a wood spindle on the bail handle for ease of carrying, our tobacco tin would be a jewel for any tobacco collection, or vintage advertising enthusiast. Our lunch pail tin was present at the turn of the 19th century, and has been witness to so much of the history of our nation. Of the things it carried and the secrets it kept, we cannot guess, but we know it was handed down through the years and is ready to buying hold your choice objects now. Or display it as a choice object itself. It was said a poor man carried his lunch in this kind of pail as he went to work. Those so called poor working men were and are the backbone of this country, and our tobacco tin represents that proud history.
Measuring 8" wide including the bail handle hardware, x 4 3/4" tall x 4 1/2" deep, our box is in good vintage condition for a tin of this type at or over 100 years old. Made in the early 1900's-1910's, our tobacco tin has the primitive look that is so popular today in a piece of vintage tobacciana or advertising decor. The graphics are seen through years of patina, there are scratches and the top has dents and shows oxidation though you can still see the lithographs. Inside the box shows the wear and oxidation one might imagine in a tin this old. The latch is present, still able to do its job, the bail handle moves easily and the lid opens and closes without trouble, although sometimes gentle persuasion on the left corner is needed to open/shut the lid. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington in asking for aid for the army said, "If you can't send money, send tobacco". Such was the importance of tobacco at that time. Our tobacco tin represents that history and will add a little of the aura from that time to your home.
