Beautiful bronze, vintage French, pectoral crucifix by Ferdinand Py. It is a good size and beautifully detailed with Latin around the figure of Christ. The crucifix is in good condition. Some wear commensurate with age. It is signed by Py, at the bottom left, of the crucifix, just below Christ's feet. These are now becoming very collectible and even with age, they still look superb. A testament to the quality of the craftsmanship. Very good patina. In good condition.
A wonderful devotional gift for a special occasion.

Designed by French engraver Fernand Py, this stunning, vintage crucifix depicts a gaunt Christ surrounded by the words “Ecce Lignum Crucis in Quo Salutis Mundi”, from the Good Friday Liturgy, which means “Behold the wood of the cross on which [hung] the salvation of the world. French medalist and artist, Fernand Py is known today for his unique depictions of the Saints and religious art. His French motto — "Ars longa, vita brevis" means 'the art is long, the life is short'. A true testament to his slogan, his art still lives on today, even decades after his death.
Fernand started out as an apprentice working in a furniture store in Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris. It was there that he discovered and began working with ivory to make small carved statuettes. He quickly developed his trade and expanded his work to medals, and even paintings. A key feature of his art is the use of dis-proportioned and exaggerated features. Each Fernand Py piece is also rubbed with a soft patina giving them a distinct look and character.
