How to distinguish between natural silk and rayon(Artificial silk)?
Silk is a natural fiber that comes in a filament form. Long fibered silk yarn is reeled and short fibers are spun. Rayon (Artificial silk) is a manufactured fiber composed of regenerated cellulose..
The most simple way to distinguish natural silk thread from rayon is:
Get a lighter, place the thread you bought over the lighter fire, if it is natural silk thread, it burns, but when you move the lighter away, the fire extinguishes, you would see a very small lump, crush it with your fingers, it comes off in a form of powder.Meanwhile, you would sense a smell, the smell is the same as burning your own hair. That is because natural silk thread is made from silkworm's cocoon, the main component of which is protein.
If you place rayon thread over the fire, you move the lighter away, the thread keeps burning quickly. When you blow the fire off, you would see a black lump, it is hard, when it cools off ,you crush it with your fingers, it won't come apart.Meanwhile, the smell is like pungent as burning plastic, .
By touching the thread: natural silk is soft and color is lustrous, but gentle.Meanwhile ,rayon is stiffer , the color is somehow swanking.
Now that you have known what you get is silk buying thread or not.
But silk thread could be divided into reeled silk and spun silk. How to distinguish them?
Untwist one yarn gently. Reeled silk has less twist than spun. It is naturally more lustrous than spun silk. As you continue to untwist the yarns in your fingers, the reeled silk yarn will start to fan out or shred apart.
Untwist the spun silk yarns. Spun silk yarns are generally dull and cotton-like. These highly twisted yarns require extra time to untwist. Since the fibers are shorter, the high twist holds the short ends together. As you continue to untwist the yarn with your fingers, the fibers do not lie parallel and appear of varied short lengths.
