The sword was forged in the First Age by the famous dwarven blacksmith Telchar of Nogrod.

In the Second Age, Narsil was the heirloom of the descendants of Elros, the first King of Númenor. Although nothing is said of Narsil during this period, it eventually fell into the hands of a distant grandson, Elendil, towards the close of the Second Age.

Elendil carried Narsil at the Battle of Dagorlad, where he shone with the light of the Sun and Moon, and buying later at the Siege of Barad-dûr; but Sauron slew him, and as the sword fell, it split in two under him, and his light was extinguished. Elendil's son Isildur took the sword and used its fragment to cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand. Isildur took the broken pieces home with him. Shortly before Isildur was killed in the Catastrophe of the Gladden Fields in the second year of the Third Age, the fragments were recovered by Ohtar, Isildur's lord. He took them to Rivendell, where Isildur's youngest son, Valandil, was cared for and raised, but Elrond said he would not be forged again until the One Ring was found again and Sauron returned.

Fragments of Narsil were relics of the Kings of Arnor, and remained relics of the Rangers of the North after the North Kingdom was destroyed. Fragments remained unforged until the War of the Ring at the end of the Third Age. Finally, for Aragorn, then Chief of the Dúnedain and heir to Isildur, Andúril was forged again in Rivendell as the "Flame of the West".

He carried the sword during his journey south as part of the Fellowship of the Ring and fought it on many occasions. He referred to it as the "Broken Sword" or "Reforged Sword".
