NATIVE AMERICAN SPIRITUAL LEGEND OF THE DREAM-CATCHER & HOW A DREAMCATCHER WORKS
After the first-people came to live upon mother earth they were often haunted by the old spirits in their dream-time. The old spirits would give the people bad dreams. The tree-people and the bird-people felt sorry for them, so they came up with the idea of making the dream-catcher, to catch the bad dreams so the people would only have good dreams. The tree-people gave their branches to make the Sacred Hoop (representing life, which has no beginning and no end), the bird-people gave their feathers so it would "fly true" in the wind; the ocean-people gave their shells for decoration; the four-legged-people gave their hide to hold it all together; each part of nature gave up pieces of herself to make the dream-catcher for the first peoples; who only had good dreams from then on. --- All dreams enter the web at night when the sleeper is dreaming. The good dreams - knowing the way to go - make their way to the centre of the spiral web, pass through the hole and drift down to the dreaming person. The bad dreams get confused by the spiral web and don't know the way to go, so they stay caught in the web until dawn when they are dissolved by the first morning's sunlight. The traditional design of the spiral web is the only authentic way to weave the web so that it works, and be traditionally associated as a sacred tool. (Real spiders weave a spiral; spirals are commonly found in nature). This traditional spiral design is what ensures the sleeper only has good dreams. Many have testified that dream catchers successfully stopped their children from having nightmares.
