This is a unique, handmade, porcelain mug. It holds around 12 ounces and is decorated with hand applied patterning and bold underglaze brushwork. The front side of the mug is decorated with textured satin blue glaze and a crepe myrtle motif which was applied with a sumi brush giving the line quality interest and a dynamic quality. To contrast the front side the handle side of the mug is decorated in a contrasting glossy dark gray glaze which creates a flat plainer surface to play against the texture of the blue glaze and brushwork. The mug would be a great daily buying addition to your morning coffee or tea routine. It holds around 16 fluid ounces and is nice to hold. All of my wares are microwave and dishwasher safe.

This piece started off with porcelain that was made by hand in my studio. The body of the mug was thrown on the wheel, cut off, and allowed to partially dry before the bottom was trimmed and cleaned and the handle added. Then the mug was wrapped up and the drying controlled to prevent any cracking or warping. Once completely dry it was loaded into a kiln with other wares and heated to 1875 F. This first firing ensures that the wares are durable enough for decoration and glazing. After the kiln had cooled and was unloaded each piece had a liner glaze applied and was set aside to completely dry overnight. Once the lip and exterior was cleaned with a damp sponge a layer of wax resist was applied to protect the liner glaze from any further glaze application. After the inside was waxed the bottom of the piece was also waxed and then a mask was applied to block off the area for the satin black glaze on the handle side. After the masking was applied the satin black glaze was poured over the surface. Once this had dried and the edges cleaned another layer of wax was put down, this time over the black glaze. The masking was then removed and a black underglaze was applied to front side of the mug to create the crepe myrtle pattern. These areas were then also waxed to prevent glaze from sticking to them and the textured satin blue glaze was poured over the area. Once all of the glaze had dried the piece was gone over one more time with a damp sponge to remove any unwanted areas of application and then loaded into the kiln once more. This final firing heats the work to 2200 F which melts the glazes and claybody making them hard and durable.
