The spine has a beautiful Iris design which is an iconic symbol of art nouveau design. the book contains many black and white illustrations particularly in the new books catalog at the end of the book. The fitted box is clearly a latter addition but is still nice and protects the book well.
Rosa Mulholland who became Lady Gilbert was born in Belfast, Beginning buying her literary career at a very young age, Mulholland attempted to publish her first book at age 15. She submitted several comical illustrations to the literary journal Punch, but they were ultimately rejected. She received much help and encouragement from Charles Dickens, who highly valued her work and persuaded her to continue writing.
Talwin Morris was art director of the Glasgow-based publishers, Blackie and Son, from 1893-1909 and was part of a flourishing Glasgow art scene which included Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Margaret Macdonald, Frances Macdonald and Herbert McNair. He is best known for his very distinctive art nouveau Glasgow style book cover designs. The Illistrations are by Gordon Frederick Browne RI RBA (15 April 1858 – 27 May 1932) who was an English artist and a prolific illustrator of children's books in the late 19th century and early 20th century. He was a meticulous craftsman and went to a great deal of effort to ensure that his illustrations were accurate.
