This is a photographic print of a man poling up the Rio Grijalva, silhouetted by the setting sun.
I was just buying beginning a month long trek following what was then called "La Ruta Maya". (Perhaps it still is.) In those days I traveled about Mexico and Central America by hitchhiking and bus, whichever seemed best at the time. I arrived in Villahermosa, Tabasco, several days out of Mexico City, my home at the time and was looking forward to a break. When I stepped from the bus the heat and humidity slammed me so I wasted no time in finding a place to stay. Next I ambled down to the Rio Grijalva to cool off and look for photos in the last minutes of the day. This one I saw developing - everything was right for it but my position. The bank was almost impenetrable with jungle and huts and I must have run half a klick to find an opening that gave me time for just two shots. That was the end of the work day for me - just one photo but I knew it was a great one!
