This is a rare and beautifully crafted Santa Maria Ship Ice Cream Mold #1018 from E & Co NY. This is one mold from my grandmother's collection of about 50 molds that she collected with joy throughout her life, as a faithful member of Quester's. (Other molds buying are available so feel free to ask about others.)
It measures approx. 5 1/2" x 2". This piece is in very nice antique condition with normal wear and surface marks due to age and use. The inside is clean with no rust.
It will make a wonderful addition to any pewter mold collection.
The item is priced to sell, but don't be afraid to make an offer.
BACKGROUND: Ice cream molds were manufactured to enable individual servings. The molds have a Victorian feel, and were used by restaurateurs, dairies and caterers to treat their guests to eye-pleasing desserts. People who wanted to impress their family and friends in their homes used the molds to create special and unique confections for dinner parties, picnics, birthday parties, holidays and other special occasions. The ice cream would be spooned into both sides of the mold. The mold was then closed and both sides were pressed firmly together. The heavy pewter kept the cold inside, making the ice cream firm and in the shape of the mold. When the mold was opened, the ice cream would be served so that the design was visible.
You also could use this type of mold to make other types of molds, including soap, plaster casts, etc.
