Talhakimt pendants in beautiful hand cut carnelian by master gem cutters of the Idar Oberstein group. They are the oldest continuously operational gem cutting factory in the world and they still exhibit at the Tucson, Arizona gem shows which are the largest of it's kind in the US.
Mixed shades of opaque to translucent red, orange, red brown and apricot swirls of color, see photos for the the colors in each.
Every piece is made from natural carnelian agate and is unique in color, and size. Some wear is to be expected as these were made in the late 1800's to the early 1900's.
Talhakimt pendants were produced during the trade bead era, which peaked between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Talhakimts, were exported mainly to West Africa, where they were believed to have protective properties. Mauritanian women wore them in elaborate headdresses and woven buying into long braids. The most spectacular examples of this kind of adornment were found among the dancers of the Guedra, a traditional dance in which women displayed their love for men in ritual form.

Pieces of well travelled history perfect for your bead and jewelry collection. Equally ideal for creating your own wearable work of art. A kumihimo braid would be a great start to build a necklace as well as macrame or added to sterling silver chain with other worldly elements. Whatever you make with these, you have an excellent piece to start with.
