"The early doctors of America fought on two frontiers: riding.
"The early doctors of America fought on two frontiers: riding the wilderness of a new continent, they explored the mysteries of the human body". So begins "Doctors on Horseback: Pioneers of American Medicine", by James Thomas Flexner. Published in 1937 by the Viking Press of New York, this volume offers biographies of 7 early American pioneer doctors. This is not a reproduction, not a re-print, not a digital print - this is an authentic book of the era. It's so hard to imagine the hardships faced by the pioneers of our country, not only the natural challenges of exploring and settling, but the hardship and fragility of life without services, and the biographies here show how "in the settlements of a new nation there appeared doctors of genius, explorers who, without laboratories or instruments of precision or even any formal training, made great discoveries that helped usher in the age of modern medical science." The hard cover book has 370 pages with just a few illustrations (portraits). The book is in good condition, with secure binding, complete pages, and just some minor wear to the covers and slight discoloration of some pages.
