Our Shiwan Standing Fisherman is a great gift for collectors or fishing enthusiasts. The figure is about 10 inches tall.
They are all handmade by artisans in Shiwan, Guangdong, China. The Shiwan province is renowned for their craftsmanship in figurines. Unfortunately, this style of figurine is becoming increasingly rare buying as many artisans have retired from the trade and younger generations uninterested in continuing the traditions. Because of this, Shiwan Figurines are heading in the direction of becoming a lost art. The figurines we have were made by some of the last original craftsmen in Shiwan in 2004.
The Shiwan area has a history of producing pottery since the Neolithic era, with large scale production really ramping up during the late Ming dynasty. Artisans in the area make use of the hilly wooded land to build dragon kilns running up the slopes. Roof tiles and architectural ornaments are of the most famous products from Shiwan, especially in its use in architecture during the Qing Dynasty.
