Virgin in Majesty
Stone sculpture representing the Virgin Mary, carrying her buying divine child Jesus Christ. This representation is called "in majesty" because it represents the Virgin in her sacred attributes, seated on a throne and surrounded by angels and holy figures. This representation of the Virgin was particularly used in the Middle Ages, before being gradually replaced in the Renaissance by other types.
The mandorla (geometric symbol in the shape of an almond) in which the Virgin is installed represents the celestial sphere, the passage to the heavens and the divine world. Again, this is a typical medieval representation, whose first known models date back to about 1500 years ago.
