Specification: This yarn is super soft (19.5 micron) and is 100% Australian merino. The wool fibre is commerically dyed.
As I have been unable to source super soft, low felted yarn in Australia, I decided to make my own and share it with others! I source my fibre from an Australian woollen mill, I then work with it so that it is suitable to knit with. The resulting yarn has a slight twist and is very slightly felted which makes in more durable than roving and will prevent excessive pilling. Due to the handmade nature of the yarn there may be slight variations in the thickness, however this is not noticable one the yarn is knitted up.
The yarn may vary in thickness slightly depending on the colour. If ordering wool for a single project I recommend ordering your yarn in one batch, as I cannot guarentee that different batches will be identical in colour or thickness.
I am happy to send out small samples of fibre to enable you to check the colour as it is difficult to be 100% representative in a photo, colours may however vary slightly depending on the individual batch of fibre.
Knitting: I recommend knitting the yarn up with 35 or 45mm needles.
1.2 kgs of wool will knit a 70 x110cm (approx) lap throw using 35mm needles (these are available under a separate listing and also in my DIY Lap Throw Kits)
Benefits of Wool: The natural protein fiber of wool has a greater bulk than other fibers and holds air which ensures that it has fantastic insulating properties. Wool also has flame retardant properties as well as being considered to have a very low allergenic risk.
Care: As with all knitted woollen pieces, pilling will occur as the knit is used, however the pills can be gently removed on a regular basis to maintain the look of the item. Excessive wear and tear and abrasive surfaces should be avoided as should sharp items, as these can catch on the fibers and cause pulls which can damage the integrity of the chunky yarn.
Dry cleaning is recommended for blankets buying and throws. They can be hand washed gently (do not agitate) in very cool water, the excess water removed by carefully squeezing the item (do not wring or twist) and then rolling the item in a towel. It can be gently reshaped and dried flat, out of direct sunlight. Note that immersion in warm/hot water and agitation will result in felting and shrinkage.
