--- DETAILS ---
• A PDF information sheet accompanies each print (and/or via Etsy messages upon request). The information sheet includes details about the D'rash Design Project as well as a description of what inspired the image (as follows):
ESTHER
Theme: Diplomacy /מדינאות
Italian diplomat Daniele Varè once said, “Diplomacy is the art of letting someone have your way,” which is exactly what Queen Esther achieved by successfully navigating the unstable overlap of her background as a Jew and her new role as queen of Persian king Ahasuerus. Esther, although often described as a docile and obedient consort, bolsters her courage enough to act in order to save her native people from certain death. In this image, I represent Esther's diplomacy through overlapping shapes and colors—for example, the three rectangular color blocks overlaid on the top element (her portrait) were actually created by overlapping two transparent squares (kind of like a Venn Diagram). The background elements include a variety of intermixing ray-like shapes, whose colors blend with and influence each other.
MIRIAM
Theme: Sustenance / מחיה
I believe Miriam provided sustenance to her people in two key ways—by conjuring water sources throughout their journey in the desert, and by lifting their spirits with music and dance. She is a nurturer and healer, yet also flawed in very human (and thus relatable) ways. While Miriam is known to be Moses' and Aaron's sister, she is never described as a wife or a mother—she transcends traditional depictions of women and forges her own role among her people. I wanted Miriam's portrait to show her as if suspended in water or airborne during a dance, luminous and free-flowing.
DEBORAH
Theme: Victory / ניצחון
Women, in the Torah and elsewhere, are often represented as functions of their roles as wife, daughter and/or mother—they are described as existing by virtue of their relationship to another person, usually a man. Deborah stands as an exception to this unfortunate rule. She is, above all, a warrior, prophetess, leader, chieftain, protector and judge. She is a symbol of victory, a term often assigned only to men in a military capacity, and the force responsible for pushing the Israelite general Barak to fight against Canaanite commander Sisera. Visually, I translated Deborah's victorious spirit with rays that give a sense of light and of being uplifted. The flowing nature of the rays and the swirls is a nod to Deborah's multifaceted role as a leader of the Israelites. I also included the botanical pattern behind her portrait as a reference to buying her habit of delivering prophecies under a date palm tree.
