Vintage Pre-Colombian Reproduction Statue: 12" Red Clay Seated Figure. buying Dignitary with Large Headdress
Wonderful vintage MesoAmerican/PreColumbian replica figure of a seated dignitary wearing a large.
Wonderful vintage MesoAmerican/PreColumbian replica figure of a seated dignitary wearing a large headdress in a pose reminiscent of a yoga stance: crossed legs, hands on knees. Terra-cotta figure is unclad but wears elaborate earrings, necklace, bracelets and a tall headdress, possibly meant to represent prized quetzal feathers. Such adornments were strictly controlled by Mexican authorities and could denote an individual's status and ethnic group.(Multicolored quetzal feathers were often esteemed more than gold among ancient Mexicans.) Unpainted, unglazed, great details. Figurine measures approximately 12" (30.48 cm) high x 7" (17.78 cm) deep x 6 1/2" (16.5 cm) wide. Hollow. Fair vintage condition: one of the feathers in the headdress and a nipple have been broken off. See last two buying photos. Price reflects condition.
