As accepted by most, Turkish walnut is the most quality and famous walnut in the world. We are located in Kahramanmaraş, a historical and well-known city which has the highest walnut production of Turkey. Woodcarving is a tradition of hundreds of years here and we are a business with 40 years of experience.
The Process of How This Item is Made:
The Supply of Wood and How to Choose
Firstly, the old trees around the age of 80-100 years which does not bear walnut anymore are being cut under the control of Regional Directorate of Forestry which happens at the full moon period of the month to avoid the helminthiasis.
When the roundwood comes to the workshop, it is cut into wooden boards which is called as 'lata'. Then, the wooden boards are sent to the steaming room. After a week, these wooden boards are put into an indoor space in an order to let them take the air. And they are left to dry for 2-3 years.
Production
When the dry wood arrives in workshop, depending on the size of the product, the wood is attached with wood glue, tightened by clamp and waits for a day to dry. After that, the surface of the wood is smoothened by the help of planning machine.
The models are usually inspired by the Roman and Ottoman baroque. We scratch the model on the wood and do the upsetting with the help of molding machine. And then we do the handcarving. We have 25 kinds of chisels which we use depending on the carving. It takes between several days and several months depending on the workload.
After the carving comes the process of what we call 'zımba' which is hitting the deeper parts with a nail to make the patterns more visible. And we do the sanding to get a smoother surface.
When the item is ready to paint, we do the impregnation first, to protect the wood from the insects. And after painting we do the varnishing to protect the wood from external influences.
Waits for a day after the varnishing before it gets ready.
This one is designed as a photo frame.
The inner sizes are 17,5 cm x 13 cm
There might be very little defects because it is pure handmade.
