Vintage Campfire Enamelware Kettle. White with wooden handle and sky-blue trim.
Size: 12" to top of handle; 9" to top of body; width 11" from spout to opposite side; Base diameter 10"; top opening 7"
Heavy item at 3 lbs. The kettle has a slight convex bias at the base. No makers mark but possibly from USA.
This has been used with rust spots on base and inside however it does not leak. There is a chip on the lid but this does not detract from the overall beauty of the kettle. See photo 7 for comparison of size with a small coffee mug.
In wonderful condition for its age. This would be a great item for display in your country kitchen collection.
The history of enamel cookware starts in the late 1700s in Germany trying to find a way of coating iron to stop metallic tastes or rust getting into food: something acid-resistant and easy to clean without scouring and being durable. Fifty years later vitreous enamel linings, (porcelain) for kitchen pans was in use in Europe.
Enamelware was the first mass-produced American kitchenware. Production began in the 1870s, and continued through the 1930s. Items such as pots, kettles baking tins, and ladles were stamped from buying thin sheets of iron, steel, or aluminum, then coated with enamel, which was fused to the metal in a very hot oven. Much lighter than the average kitchenware, easier to clean and less fragile than china, enamelware was very popular.
Enamelware was manufactured again in the US during the 1960s, and is still produced in locations around the world.
