Tota Pulchra Est Maria Medal
Tota pulchra es is an old Catholic prayer, written in the fourth century. It is one of the five antiphons for the psalms of Second Vespers for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The title means "You are completely beautiful" (referring to the Virgin Mary). It speaks of her immaculate conception.
Cast in bronze, this antique 1800s medal bears, on the front, an image of the Virgin Mary standing on billowing heavenly clouds with a crescent moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. Her image is flanked by the Latin words "TOTA PULCHRA ★ EST MARIA." On the reverse is a radiant spray of lilies with two open flowers and many buds in various stages of development. The lily is a symbol for the Virgin Mother and it symbolizes Mary's purity, innocence, and virginity. The Spanish text "HIJAS DE LA PURISIMA CONCEPCION DE MARIA" (Daughters of the Immaculate Conception of Mary).
The mandorla shaped medal measures about 1 1/8" wide x 1 3/4" tall. The cast is clean and crisp and the images are presented in lovely relief with fine details. In Excellent antique condition.
