Hercules and Hesione, the Trojan Princess
Hesione was the daughter of King Laomedon of Troy. Hercules met Hesione after his year of enslavement to Omphale when he set out for Troy. Hercules found Troy in a state of crisis, as King Laomedon had cheated Poseidon and Apollo by failing to pay them for building the walls. For punishment, Poseidon had sent a large sea monster, who would only be appeased by devouring the princess, Hesione. Hercules sought to kill the monster and naturally expected a reward, such as Laomedon's amazing horses. Hercules bravely killed the beast by allowing himself to be swallowed by the monster, whom he then killed from the inside. But once a cheat always a cheat: Laomedon skimped on paying Hercules too.

In Greek mythology, the preacher of Hercules in the myth of Dianeira and Iolis is mainly known as Lichas. Lichas is better known than Sophocles' tragedy "Trachinia". After the fall of Oichalia, Lichas drove Ioli to Trachina by order of Hercules and brought there the tunic of Nessus, which he handed over to Hercules by order of Dianeira. This narrative, however, had been recorded earlier by Aeschylus. The geographer Strabo reports that the Lichad Islands (known today as "Lichadonissia") between the northwestern tip of Evia and Fthiotida were named after the preacher Lichas. However, this connection is rather later and was created a posteriori only for the etymology of the name of these islands. According to the commentator of Sophocles, Lichas was a companion of `Yllos, while others believed that he was his teacher.
A newer tradition, embraced by Ovid's "Transfigurations", says that Lichas was transformed into a rock when Hercules, accusing him of carrying the deadly tunic, threw him into the Gulf of Evia. In one red-shaped vase, Lichas is depicted together with Hercules and Philoctetes, while in another vase during the sacrifice at Kinion.
The name Lichas also refers to a Spartan who discovered the bones of Orestes, which according to a Delphic oracle were necessary to be found in order for the Spartans to defeat the Tegeates.
