I have always been drawn to the opening words of Thomas Wolfe's novel, Look Homeward, Angel, set in Asheville North Carolina. The entire title is Look Homeward, Angel: A Story of the Buried Life, and is an autobiographical American coming-of-age story. Eugene Gant is generally believed to be a depiction of Wolfe himself. The controversial novel primarily covers the span of time from Eugene's birth in 1900 to his departure from home at the age of 19, from his fictional home town, Altamont.
