Jacques Hobe was a Parisian master jewelry craftsman goldsmith who became a royal jeweler to the court of France in 1883.
His son William inherited the trade secrets and at end of WW !! moved to California and in 1920 to New York. He added the costume jewelry division. The company held to high standards of craftsmanship using historical designs with modern settings at affordable prices. It catered to the Hollywood stars and wardrobe directors, specializing in sterling or gold-washed sterling or gold tone electroplated metal set with semi-precious stones, rhinestones, plastic tropical fruits, and unusual bead combinations. The company continued to pass buying on to the next generations. It is known for keeping accurate account of changes in the design of its logo and pieces are most always hallmarked.
Initially it used a crossed sword logo. In 1918-1932 it used a house-shaped outline with Hobe on the first line, and Design Pat, on the second line. In 1933 to 1957 it used a triangle outline, the first line Hobe and second line Design Pat. In 1958 to 1963 it changed to Hobe written with accent and copyright sign in oval. Then in 1999 , Hobe with accent. Most recent Hobe with an accent and copy right sign placed over the O. This piece therefore is a later design.
