Beautiful buying and rare jewelry box made of southern hardwood (Nanyu) lacquered black.
This jewelry box is made from a hardwood, originally brown-red and black lacquered in the 50s at the time of French Indochina. This very rare wood nowadays, chosen for its quality of resistance to moisture and heat, has charmed Chinese, Japanese and Korean scholars.
Hand-painted, the design depicts a Japanese landscape, with an ornamental tree called the Flower of the Cotton Tree red silk widespread in South Asia, with representation of Lake Biwa and a Japanese woman fetching water from the river carved in white mother-of-pearl.
