This ceramic cup is a piece of handmade pottery that does just that. Whether you're a boho decor or mid century modern chic type person this cup could easily fit into your everyday routine. The contrasting decorations and various glazes give your fingers alternating surfaces to play with as you go about your day to day. The blue to black glaze is a satin semi textured surface that is punctuated with hand brushed black brushwork on strategically exposed white porcelain. The other side is a semi-gloss deep brown with glossy black loops of glaze gesturally applied underneath.
This piece was thrown by hand on the potters wheel from porcelain and then allowed to partially dry before it was trimmed. Once trimmed the tumbler was loaded into an electric kiln where it was fired to 1900 F in order to make it durable for glazing. Once the first firing had cooled the piece was removed and a crisp glossy white glaze was applied to the interior and then coated with a protective layer of wax. After the interior glaze dried the piece had masking applied to divide the outside surface and the black brushwork was applied and then covered in a protective layer of wax followed by a satin blue to black glaze. After the blue glaze had dried it was covered in wax and the masking removed. After allowing the glaze to dry more the second side was masked in half diagonally and a white glaze was applied, covered in wax and then a glossy black glaze was applied. After this the piece was gone over with a damp sponge and stray bits of glaze were removed to maintain a clean crisp surface and the piece was loaded into a gas fired kiln. The final firing in the gas kiln brings the piece up to 2400 F and solidifies the claybody into a hard vitrified, non-porous material and melts the glaze buying into a glassy surface.
This piece is microwave and dishwasher safe.
