Denim brand Montana, one of the first to appear in the USSR and was officially sold in stores. It was positioned as American, was considered in quality on a par with Levis, Lee and Wrangler. Products of this brand can be purchased now, sellers claim that the brand buying is of German origin, and was founded in Hamburg in 1967. The packages of this company were considered cult and very popular, jeans cost as much as the salary of a Soviet engineer, and one such package could cost up to a quarter of the salary. The history of the unprecedented popularity and widespread distribution of Montana in the USSR is not entirely clear, but is most likely associated with personal contacts between government officials and the German manufacturer.
