This is a 1/6th-plate daguerreotype of a young boy from mid to late 1800's. He's wearing a fancy shirt with 17 buttons I can see . This is a really cute shot (please refer to the scans) though daguerreotypes don't photograph well sometimes. The image is behind glass and a brass matt and has been nicely resealed. It's in very good condition, but for some a couple small wipes and small scratches on the surface as pictured so please refer to the scans.* The daguerreotype is secured in a embossed leather case that shows typical wear for it's age while serving to provide a reasonable degree of protection when handled or in storage. The image measures approximately 3.25 x 2.75 inches.
* I'm currently experimenting with a few new methods of imaging daguerreotypes trying to find the best way to reproduce them so as to provide the their most accurate representation. At least for now, there will be scans from buying a high resolution flatbed scanner and digital camera. The camera seems to provide the closest appearance to viewing in hand while the scanner is best at picking up subtle flaws not typically visible in hand under normal viewing conditions. I'll probably end up with both.
