Thomas Gainsborough FRSA (14 May 1727 – 2 August 1788)
was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. He surpassed his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds to become the dominant British portraitist of the second half of the 18th century. He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes.
He preferred landscapes to portraits, and is credited (with Richard Wilson) as the originator of the 18th-century British landscape school. Gainsborough was a founding member of the Royal Academy.
Gainsborough, Masterpieces in Colour hardcover. No dust
jacket. 80 pages. Eight richly colored book plates, including
frontispiece. Tan paper boards with black lettering on front
and spine. Large colored face down illustration on front
board.
Measures; 8.25" by 6.25", 80 pages, 8 color plates.
The book in in well used/enjoyed condition. Browning of the
pages from natural age process. Binding is still holding although there is damage and loss to the outside. Stains and discoloration to exterior. Color plates have good color and are still vibrant, perfect for framing.
