Wonderful Victorian Ambrotype of a Lady i
Description

This wonderful Ambrotype came from a recent estate sale, hidden in a satin reticule, along with a smaller ambrotype of a young man and some jewellery which I have listed on here separately.
This lovely portrait is of a woman and I believe it dates from the mid 1800s judging by the sleeves on the lady's gown.

The lady is seated at a table with a lace coverlet and is buying holding a document in her hand, This must be of significance and it may well be a widow with her marriage or death certificate to symbolise her loss.

The photo is subtly tinted, her cheeks, and the gold medallion on her choker.

She stares off to the side not looking directly into the camera, and I can imagine she would be very pretty if her expression was animated.

The ambrotype is framed in an ornate gold tone frame the surround is worked with a wonderful scrolled design.

This has been put into a wooden frame covered with what I think is brown leather I think this would have had a cover originally as there are two hooks to one side for closure.

I think they refer to this size of Ambrotype as a sixth plate, measuring approx 3.25" in height by 2.75" in width.
The outer case itself measures approx 3.3/4" in length by 3.1/4" in width
The ambrotype and the inner gold tone frame are in good condition, The case has suffered a little, the side where the cover would have been originally has a split corner and the leather has been torn.

Please view my other Ambrotype which was done at the same time and I belive it may be her son.
